cat - petsoholic

no pets allowed - petsoholic

cat scracther - Petsoholic

- Petsoholic

- Weimarner - Petsoholic

- Petsoholic

Vet icon - Petsoholic

Bringing your New Dog Home

Congratulations… You’re getting a new dog!

That’s a big decision. And It’s gonna be one of the best things that ever happened to you…  But like all good things they come with price. And that price is going to be a lot of your time, effort, money and parts of your sanity! ?

I feel like I keep saying this every time, but it’s really crucial that I kinda have to keep repeating myself..
The first couple of days are very stressful on our pets, and as a responsible dog companion, you should do your best to make sure you ease this transitional phase as much as you can on your new friend. And to do that, we have to do a lot of research and preparations beforehand.

Dogs are like toddlers… Except they never grow up!

The Ride Home:  ?

Puppies who are not used to riding in cars can get anxious, and may get sick if the ride home is long. So take care and try to make it as stress free as you can.

Don’t bring the whole family. Too many people in the car will increase the dog’s stress level specially if you have excited toddlers with you. However, it’s always better to have someone calm with you in the car to help sooth the dog while you’re driving, and drive steady.

Preparations:

Preparing your home for your new dog is very important. Specially with puppies. Because puppies are toothing and it hurts, so they can be really destructive if you don’t plan your safety measurements ahead…

1. Dog-Proof your home:

  • Get on the floor,
Checkout if there’s anything your dog may chew, swallow, pee or poop on, and put them away.
Dogs and specially puppies, LOVE chewing on things like; shoes, cloths, paper, electrical wires. Basically they chew on everything. But on the positive side, you can always replace these things with chew toys.

  • Remove any electrical wires,
and buy those small outlet protectors, to protect your dog from electrocuting himself.

  • Remove anything that could be toxic to your dogs like;
cleaners, detergents, pesticides, herbicides and all those chemical stuff. Put them away somewhere your dog can’t reach. And NEVER use them around your dogs.

  • Careful when cleaning your floors;
some dogs enjoy licking the floor for different reasons, like finishing off food crumbs from the floor. And Harmful chemical residues from hard floor cleaners are toxic to dogs.
Sometimes the effect is instant and sometimes it could hurt them over time. So try switching to Non-Toxic, all natural cleaners, look at the ingredients before buying them, and be careful.

  • Some plants are toxic to dogs;
so make sure you do your research and remove any dogs toxic plants, and make sure all your plants are pet friendly.

  • Remove any sharp objects;
I know this may sound obvious, but honestly we all need  little reminders for those little things.

  • Close your windows;
Remember when we said that; dogs are like toddlers! Curiosity and over excitement can cause accidents.

2. Food, water and serving bowls:New Dog - dog Food bowl - petsoholic

  • Ask about your dog’s current diet;
It’s very important to ask the previous owner what kind of food was he feeding your dog?
Because a sudden change in diet could upset his/her stomach.
If you want to work on changing his diet; go slowly, and make small changes daily on a period of 2 weeks. Depending on your dog’s breed, age, and your budget. Make sure to do a lot of research, read and ask your vet to make sure you can give him the best nutritional value, and to know what to avoid, so he can be happy and healthy.
  • Have some Yummy treats

⚠️ Don’t depend on myths and word of mouth from inexperienced dog owners, or show-offs. Ask the right person, or better ask your trusted vet.

  • Food and water bowls;
The best bowls material are; stainless steel ones. They’re durable, easy to clean, and safe for your dogs.
    And avoid plastic bowls;
Because, your dog may end up chewing his bowl, and it’s very dangerous if he swallows the little pieces.
And plastic can accumulate harmful bacteria, which consequently hurts your dog.

  • Keep it clean;
“If you don’t like eating in a dirty bowl… Then why should he?!”

Dirty plates accumulate germs and bacteria which can make your dog sick. So clean up the bowls, and give it a quick rinse after every meal, just as we would with our own plates.
Make sure to wash their water bowls and change their water regularly.

3. Get a safety gate, a crate or get Creative:New Dog - safety gate

To avoid any house-training accidents, It’s very advisable to block a certain area in your home at the beginning, rather than letting him roam across the house, specially when you’re not around.  And then gradually start giving him more and more space.

4. Stain Remover

Get a dog’s stain remover and keep it handy, or you can make your own natural recipe at home because, accidents may happen, and you’ll need to get that as quickly as possible.
Personally, I prefer going for the natural home recipe, because the less chemicals you use the healthier you and your dog will be. Needless to say, that it is defiantly the cheaper choice.

New Dog - spray-bottle

How to Create your own Home-made stain remover:
You will need:

Vinegar, Baking Soda, and Water.
Mix Up 50% Water with 50% Vinegar in a spray bottle. and follow these steps;

Step 1: Step 1 If he did a “No.2”, Get a plastic bag or scoop and instantly remove it. If he did a “No.1”, Get a paper towel, and leave it to soak…

Don’t Rub it or you’ll spread it, just leave it to soak for a couple of seconds.

Step 2: Step 2 Now, Spray the area with the water and vinegar spray, that you prepared earlier, and leave it for a few minutes.

Step 3: Step 3 While the area is still wet, spread some baking soda on it. And that helps absorbing any bad odor.

Step 4: Step 4 Finally, after its dry, vacuum the area, and you have a clean,  fresh smelling floor, carpet, or whatever surface area you are on.

Important Note: Don’t use this mixture if you have marble floors, because marble may react to the acidity in the vinegar, and cause some sort of discoloration in the area.

5. Give Him Toys… Or he’ll Claim your shoes!

Because puppies are teething, their teeth hurts and they really need to chew. So if you don’t want your walls, magazines, cables, remote New Dog - dog claims shoescontrol and your favorite shoes chewed on, you have to get them chewing-toys.

Look for high quality but cheaper versions, because they will get destructed and you will have to repurchase them again and again. However, if you want to save money and have some fun, then you can always go for the Home-Made versions. But make sure they are safe for your dog, that they don’t have any harmful chemicals, colors, small particles that your dog can swallow and the right safety measurements for your dog breed.

6. Grooming kit:New Dog - Dogs grooming - petsoholic

You will need:

Gentle dog shampoo, Nail clipper, the right brush for your dog’s coat, and hair trimmer

Or you can always go to a vet or a dog groomers to do it for you. But doing it at home, is much cheaper. But, if you are new with dogs, I advice you go to groomers at least the first couple of times, ask them all you need to ask, and then do it yourself when you think you are ready to do it without hurting your little guy.

7. Bed:

Your dog needs a place to sleep. So you need to get him a comfortable bed, with the right material. Depending on the weather where you live, the breed and the size of your dog. Make sure you pick up the right size and material, so that your dog ends up actually using his bed.

8. Collar, Identification tag, and leash:

New Dog - Dog ID Tag

I guess you already know that, but dog collars and very important. Because they will allow you to have more control on your dog in

emergency situations, and If God forbids your dog ever runs away or gets lost, you are more likely to find him if he does have his collar and his ID on, with his name and your phone number printed on it.
And make sure you get the appropriate, comfortable Collar, leash’s size and material, for your specific dog.

Microchipping your dog will also help you find him in case you lost him or if he got stolen.

Settling in:

  • Put in mind that he needs some time and space to get used to his new environment, new people, new sounds, new smells and getting over his separation anxiety from his old life.  So make sure that the house is calm, and that you have no guests coming for the first couple of days. And If you have kids, sit and talk to them on how to properly interact with the dog, to make sure everything goes right, to help your new dog settle in his new home.
  • Keep constant supervision on your dog, and give extra time and attention. Involve him and get him accustomed to your daily routine.

  • Make sure you establish your house rules and routines from day one. Take him out for potty, going for walks, and watch for the signs, and give him praise every time he goes potty in the right place.
  • If you have other pets, make sure to properly introduce them, so no accidents may occur.
  • Make sure to involve him in your daily routine, so he can get used to it.

Remember to; walk your dog everyday, give him lots of toys, love and attention. And try to keep him stimulated. The more you exercise your dog, the less he will embrace destructive habits.

Why you should never feed your cat a dry food ONLY diet?

For years, pet markets shelves were filled with so many dry food options for cats, claiming to have all these different benefits and nutritional values. And to many cats companions, this was the best choice… I mean, Why not! Right!
It has all these nutritional values they claim, it’s easy to feed your cat, it’s a less mess and fuss than having to prepare their meals, it doesn’t go bad as quickly… It’s the obvious choice.

So, In order to help you guys out, I went through so many veterinarian resources, talked to a couple of my trusted vets and this is what I got.
I don’t want to get you into a lot of scientific complications, so I will do my best to explain this as simple as possible.

First things first;
What should a cat’s diet consist of?dry food - fat cat - petsoholic

Cats are carnivores, originated from the desert. They are hunters who need meat and moist to survive.

As you may already know, a cat’s diet should consist of; a HIGH protein and a High moisture diet, moderate level of fats, and only about 1-2% Carbohydrates.

That being said, you should also know that commercial dry food mostly consists of Carbohydrates and some other ingredients that you do NOT want most of them inside your felines.

So, Why exactly is Dry food bad for cats?

Dry fodry food - Junk food for cars - Petsoholicod is basically “Junk Food” for cats and dogs. So saying dry food is good for your pets, is just like saying Hot-dogs and a Happy Meal, will make your kids grow healthier.
Are they delicious, yes they are… Does they destroy your health? Unfortunately they do…

Dry food has a direct relationship with the causes of sooo many harmful diseases for cats. On top of these diseases, is one of the most common, and deadly causes, which is; “Urethral obstructions”.

1. Urethral Obstructions, Inflamed bladder (cystitis/FIC):

Inflamed bladder (Cystitis/FIC), may lead to “Urethral obstructions”. Which simply means that your cat’s urinary bladder is blocked, and they can’t “pee”.  Which can be life-threatening and may cause death in 3 – 6 days. Specially in male cats.

If you notice your cat goes to the litter box in attempt to go, but he/she is having trouble doing it. You shouldn’t wait for more than 12 hrs. (Max.) before taking him/her to the vet.

2. Obesity:dry food diet_Petsoholic

Dry food is the leading cause of obesity in pets. And just like us as humans, obesity leads to many serious diseases. Including; Diabetes, Vomiting, Chronic Diarrhea, High blood pressure, Skin and Coat problems, Liver Failure, Heart diseases, Allergies, Kidney disease, and sadly so much more…

3. Food Allergies and Toxins:

As mentioned earlier, this type of food has a very small percentage of proteins. These small percentages are subjected to a lot of changes through the process of making this type of food, that it changes to; “abnormal proteins”. Then, cats immune system react to these unfamiliar shapes causing Food Allergies.

Moreover, given the types of things manufacturers put in pet food, such as; diseased and dead animals, and other toxic ingredients, with the goal of  paying less and making the most profit out of it.
These ingredients are often contaminated with a wide variety of toxic substances. And even though, some of these toxins get destroyed during the process, yet some of them don’t, and then we pay all this money just to harm our beloved pets.

4. Dehydration:

Cats wild ancestors originated from the deserts. Meaning that, most of them already have a low thirst drive, and their bodies are designed to extract all the moisture they can get from what they eat.
i.e. They don’t drink until they are about 3% dehydrated. Which is a very serious dehydration level.

So if a cat who has a low thirst drive, doesn’t drink enough water, and eats a lot of dry food with no moisture in it, this causes him/her to suffer serious dehydration, which contributes in many serious health issues including; “Urinary crystals, kidney stones, bladder infections,  kidney diseases, and FLUTD (Feline lower urinary tract disease)”.

5. Preservatives:

Just as most manufacturers do, to make sure their products have a long shelf-time. They throw in a bunch of preservatives in our food, and in our pets food as well.
I don’t need to tell you how harmful these preservatives are, because I’m sure you already know that the world is full of cancer and other killer diseases because of them.

Potential Cancer-causing agents such as BHA, BHT, and  Ethoxyquin are permitted at relatively low levels in pet and some human foods. And even though some of these chemicals have not been thoroughly studied on pets yet, they are commonly used.

[box] Myth: Some people think that dry food help clean your cats teeth, well this is a BIG FAT Myth. Kinda similar to you saying that crispy fries help clean our teeth.. Hmmm![/box]

How much is okay?

Personally, after learning about this, and after having to see one of my senior female cats passing away after suffering from “Urethral Obstructions” a couple of years ago, which is a very hard thing to go through by the way. I honestly believe, that we should never feed this Junk to our beloved pets at all, or at least as  much as we possibly can.

To quote exactly what one of the vets told me, he said:
“Male cats, should NEVER be given dry food as they are more prone to suffer from “Urethral obstructions” than females.
As for Females: If they must, they may have some dry food, but as little as possible till the age of 7 years old, after that they are considered seniors, and they should be completely cut off”.

The Best of the Worst… How to choose dry food?

As mentioned earlier, we should try to feed kibbles to our cats as less as we possibly can. However, sometimes we’re put in certain situations were dry food is our only option like if you have to leave your cat alone for the whole day, or if you’re still in the process of changing up your cat’s diet, or any other scenario… So, here are a few things to looks for when choosing your cats’ dry food.

  1. Avoid Colored dry food.
  2. Look at the expiry date.
  3. Make sure it’s age appropriate for your cat.
  4. Look at the Ingredients.
  5. Check for meat based protein.

Finally, If your cat if already addicted to dry food, and refuses to change-up his or her diet, next week I will publish an article how you can safely and slowly switch their diet.

Hope you found that useful.. I’ll See you next time ✌️

Cockatiels Care 101

Basic Information:

Commonly known as: Cockatiels, Quarians and Weiros.
Scientific name:
Nymphicus hollandicus
Origin: Australia
Average lifespan: 10 – 14 years (Wild), Up to 20 years (In Captivity)
Size: 30 – 33 cm (Adult)

So, What is a Cockatiel?

Known for their bright-colored peachy cheeks, crown feathers, beautiful voice, friendly, and very gentle nature.
These beautiful parrots come in as the second most popular pet birds world-wide, right after “budgies“.

These little cockatoos, seem to attract so many people to their homes.
However, they can be very messy. They need daily care and attention. And it is essential that they get to spend time outside their cage everyday.

Common Characteristics:

CockatielsCockatiels are a great choice for a beginner pet bird owner. Even-though i totally disagree with the term “starter pet”, but they are a great choice for beginners, since they are generally easier to train.

Cockatiels are very social, friendly, gentle and playful birds, specially if they were hand tamed. They have so many colors variations, and they can bond really well with their owners.
Moreover, they love lovee loveeee to chew (as most parrots are). In the wild, parrots most of their day searching for food, so you need to give them lots of foraging toys to keep them mentally stimulated, and give them toys they can shew on, preferably wood toys.

These amazing birds can live up to 20 years. So, if  you’re thinking about getting one, you need to make sure that you are up to such long-term commitment, and that you’ll be able to provide them with their forever home, and give them the best quality of life they deserve.

Shower these bird with love and attention, and you will get will have a bond that lasts for the rest of their lives ?

As a general rule, males tend to be more curious, vocal and easier to tame and train than females, since females instinct is more defensive.

Color Variations:

They have so many colors, but we can categorize them into 11 main color mutations:

1. Grey Tiels,
2. Pearl Tiels,
3. Pied Tiels,
4. Cinnamon Tiels,
5. Lutino Tiels,
6. Fallow Tiels,
7. Dominant Yellow Cheeck Tiels,
8. White Face Tiels,
9. White Face Tiels,
10. Recessive Silver,
11. Pastel Face Tiels.
However, each of these variations have multiple color mutations.

Vocalization:

These parrots have such beautiful voices. They can mimic their owners tunes, and come up with their own.
However, males are the true singers of this specie, while females are more on, since males use their voice as a mating call. And it’s really amazing how much different tones can these birds create.
Although some can learn to mimic a few words. However, they are not very good talkers.

How to choose a Cockatiel?P_Cockatiel

Choosing your Cockatiel is very crucial. And finding a reliable place to get your bird is very important. Nothing is sadder than bringing home a new bird, just to watch him die a few weeks later. And it gets even more complicated if you have other birds.

If you are a beginner – Make sure your get a Cockatiel that is already tamed, and preferably hand-fed.

Here’s your checklist:

1. When you go to get your bird, make sure you go in the early morning, or at the evening right before the sun set. These are the times that birds are mostly vocal and active, so it makes it easier to choose a healthy bird.

2. Look for a young, weaned bird.

3. Make sure the bird is tamed, and observe how the breeder handles the bird. Cockatiels are very smart little cockatoos. If the breeder handles the bird too roughly, and the bird gets too scared. There’s a big chance that bird gets scared for life and it may take too long to get him used to you. This is really important, specially if it’s your first time handling a bird and you’re not very experience with taming them.

4. Check their activity level
Birds are really good at hiding their sickness. So you need to look for those who are active. If a bird seems to be lazy, sitting at the button of the cage most the time, puffed up, has trouble balancing and has ruffled feathers, there’s a chance that the bird is sick.

5. Check to see if the bird’s feathers has any bold spots.

6. Check out their beaks, and feat. Make sure that they don’t have any deformities.

7. Check their eyes – his eyes should be bright and clear.

8. Check thee cage, food and water.
Unhealthy diet, and dirty cages,  increases the potentials of having a sick bird.

9. Finally, once you purchase your bird, take him to the vet to make sure he is in good health.

If you have other birds; don’t introduce the new member to the flock before getting him checked at the vet. If he is carrying any illness, you don’t want the rest of your birds to catch it.

How to care for your Cockatiels?

1. Interaction:

Cockatiels need lots of time and attention from their owner since they’re very social… So you need to make sure you have enough time to spend with them daily.

You must spend at least an hour interacting with your birds every day, and not just being near them.
Your Cockatiel considers you a part of his flock, and sometimes his mate. And In the wild, flock members do everything together. For this reason, if you want to make your tiel a happy one, you should mimic the same behavior, by trying to engage them in everything you do.

Birds are really smart, and they will pick up on your daily routine very fast, and learn to adapt to it. But, If you don’t have enough time to spend with your Cockatiel everyday, then its better if you get your bird friend a companion.

2. Cage size and Bar spacing:

Size:
“The Bigger the Better”

The Standard rule for buying any bird’s cage is that: the cage has to be double the size of the bird with its wings spread.
You can never get a cage that is too big, but you can get one the is too small!

STOP USING ROUND CAGES

Birds hate these cages. You should never get this type of cage for any bird ever. They just don’t give them any sense of security. Hence, increase their stress levels enormously.

Minimum Cockatiels cage size as recommended by professionals is: 24″ (60.96 cm) long by 18″ (45.72 cm) wide by 24″ (60.96 cm) tall for 1 Bird.

However, as mentioned earlier, Cockatiels spend some time outside the cage everyday, to get the necessary exercise and stimulation, to keep them healthy and happy.

Bar Spacing:

Bar spacing is also very important. Because, if you get a cage with bar spacing that is too wide for your bird, there is the risk of the bird sticking his head out between the bars, which may injure the bird or even worse; he may actually choke.
For Cockatiels, Bar spacing should be about: 1/2″ to 5/8″ (1.27 – 1.5875 cm).

3. Perches:Cockatiel Perches

There are so many types of perches on the market that you can choose from. However, you need to make sure that; the perches are comfortable, and that you get them in different sizes and textures.
If all the perches are of the same sizes and textures, it can cause sores and deformities in your bird’s legs.

Next, Make sure you place the perches in a way, to give your bird enough space to jump and possibly fly between them.

4. Toys:

Cockatiels ToysCockatiels LOVE toys that they can CHEW

If you decide to get a Cockatiel or any other parrot really, expect to get lots and lots of destructible toys for your birds. Because they just LOVE to chew.

Make sure you give them lots of mind stimulation with foraging toys.
And don’t bother getting them fancy toys because, we all know how expensive birds toys can be, specially when you need to replace them all the time.
There are so many D.I.Y. (Do it Yourself) toys that are very cheap, safe, and easy to make.

And remember, smart birds like Cockatiels can get bored with their toys very quickly. A good way to outsmart them, is to rotate their toys weekly, and mix them up. That way you could keep your birds interested in the same toys longer.

However, whether you are buying a toy or making one yourself, you need to be very careful and to make sure that the toys are safe for your birds. Check that there’s nothing toxic for your birds in there, and that there’s no small pieces that your bird could swallow or choke on.

5. Cleaning:

Cages must be cleaned regularly.
Place a nice bedding at the bottom of your cage, that you can easily change-up everyday or as needed.
Water bottle and food bowls or hangers, should be cleaned and refilled daily to prevent Bacterial infections.

Birds can be really messy, and they do need a lot of work.

Deep Cleaning the cage:

Deep cleaning the cage is really important, for you and your birds. And you must do it every couple of weeks.
I Personally deep clean my birds cages once a month (or more as needed)…
So, you can do it more or less depending on your birds and how much the cage is messed up.

How to deep clean the cage?

Never use soap – Birds are very sensitive. Soap and other cleaning products leave chemical residues that are toxic and may harm your birds.
To deep clean the cage; you can either use vinegar or lemon juice. Those 2 help in killing bacteria.
Personally, I prefer filling a spray bottle with water, vinegar and 1 lemon to give it a fresh smell;

1. Remove everything from the cage: Food plates, water bottles, perches and toys, and clean them thoroughly, using the same mixture above.

2. Get a new scrub, and deeply clean everything, using the spray bottle you prepared earlier. Or you can simply wash it under the sink with water first, then use a clean scrub or towel while spraying with the vinegar/Lemon juice mix.

3. Leave them to dry, then put everything back in its place

Note: If your birds are nesting, deep clean with a wet towel without touching the nest, or moving the cage.

6. Bathing:

How much should I shower my Cockatiels?

Cockatiels are very powdery birds, and they just Love showering, as it helps them

groom themselves, and get rid of excess powder. Needless to say, if you have any sort of allergies, showering your birds will be good for you too, and you’ll just love enjoy watching them have a blast and enjoy the water.

Ideally, you should shower Cockatiels every 4 days. However, this varies depending on the weather, and your bird’s personal preference. Hence, if it’s really cold, then normally you shouldn’t shower them as much.

Different ways to shower your birds:

Every bird have his or her own character, unique personality and personal preferences… Just as we as “people” do.
So you need to figure out what each of your birds love, and what makes them happy.
Not all birds enjoy showering the same way, so these are 4 different ways you could shower your birds.

1. Using a Spray Bottle:
Most birds love spray bottle baths. Fill a Spray bottle with water, and gently spray your birds.
If you find your Cockatiel rolling around, grooming herself and moving closer to the bottle, this means she’s enjoying it. But, If she flies away, its your sign to stop.

2. The Classic bowl of water bath:
Just fill up one of their larger bowls with water, and watch them enjoy their baths.
But, be careful; don’t leave the water for too long, so they don’t get bacterial infections. And don’t fill it in a deep bowl because accidents may happen, and the bird may drown.

3. Open Faucet: ?
I’ve never personally tried it, but i have seen so many videos on YouTube of bird owners opening the water tap, and the birds just love it. They fly around, pass under the water, jump in and out, and they seem to really enjoy it.
Some even advice showering with your birds, but again while making sure that you don’t use any shampoos or anything with chemicals that could potentially harm them.

4. Rolling in wet greens:
This is really nice specially on hot summer days.
Many birds love rolling around in their wet greens before eating it. It’s so adorable.
Place some wet greens like parsley and cilantro on top of your birds cage or stand. And if they like it, they will roll around in their greens like crazy… They really love it.

So just observe your birds, and that’s how you really get to know them.. The more time you give them, the more you learn and understand what makes each of them happy. And it shows in the simplest things like; Taking a Bath…

7. Sleeping?

Cockatiels need a 10-12 hours of undisturbed sleep everyday. Lack of sleep will affect your bird’s overall health. And they can get really cranky just as a sleepy toddler does.
Ideally, birds should be sleeping by sun set, and waking up with sunrise, just as they do in the wild. However, most the time we want to spend more time with our birds at night. So it’s okay as long as they are getting their 10-12 hours of sleep.

And when it’s sleep time, place your birds in their cage, and place the cage in a quiet, dark room where there’s no TV. sounds or anything that could disturb your birds.
Moreover, it is advisable to cover up your birds cage at night to help them get a good night sleep. But some birds hate covering up their cages, so in this case; don’t freak out your bird. Just place them in a dark, quiet room.

What happens if a kitten is separated too early from its mama?

Let’s face it, none of us could resist these sweet fuzzy little kittens, stumbling around with their sweet voices, furry little butts, those eyes when they open for the first time…
The curiosity, and even the hissing is just adorable.
But what happens when we take away those little furry bubbles from their mother a little too early?

So often, Non-responsible breeders who are just looking to get the best, fastest benefits out of their animals, urge people and start selling baby kittens at about 40 days old. And even though, according to vets, a 40 days old kitten could survive on its own.  However, there’s a huge difference between merely “surviving”, and taking time to develop properly to get the most benefits, they are intended to get from their mama.

Regardless of some unfortunate situations when a New Mama cat abandons her newborns, or passes away leaving her kittens on their own, kittens should be left to their mother, until she naturally starts rejecting them.

Leave it to instinct… Mama Cat Knows Best Cat

Kittens can acquire a lot of negative behaviors because of this early separation, as well as health deficiencies. A mother cat wean her babies naturally when kittens are about 2-3 months old, by starting to reject her kittens.

So what happens when you separate the kittens too early?

I. Health Problems:

Nothing in the world replaces a mother’s milk… Not even baby kitten formulas.
A mother’s milk help baby kittens grow into strong, healthy cats, as much as a mother’s milk does to human babies.
So kittens separated early from their mama, may become weak, and easily prone to illness, as their body lacks natural antibiotics that they naturally get from their mother’s milk.

II. Behavioral problems:

1. Fearful play..anxiety and panic attacks!

kittens can learn to get their sense of security from their human companions. But before that, they get their safety and calmness from their mother. So, early separated cats are more likely to be more fearful, until properly socialized.

2. Biting and rough playWhat Happens if a kitten is separated to early from its mama?- Bitting - Petsoholic

If you find your kitten biting on your hand “playfully” a little too hard that it drowse blood, there’s a good chance that she was taken away a little early before learning those skills.

Kittens, and all baby animals actually, learn how to give us soft bites and pull their claws in from their mother and siblings through play time. Playtime teaches kittens how far to go, and where to back down while playing, so they learn to use their tools right.
However, behavioral issues could be treated with the right training and patience.

3. Litter box problems.

At that early age, kittens learn everything by copying their mother. a well litter-trained mama cat, is more likely to give us well litter-trained kittens. So its easier to train them when they come home.
That being said, if your cat or kitten is not using the litter-box properly, that does not mean she must have been separated early.

I have another article explaining everything Litter-box related in details, so here’s the link, if you want to Learn how to properly Litter-box train or Re-train your Cat/kitten

One Special Dog Story

One Dog Show…

Location: Dubai, UAE
Dubai Dog Show, 2011

me with the dog
“As I was entering the show, felt like I was walking into dogs’ heaven..”

I was so excited to be surrounded by all these amazing dogs, to get to meet them all and talk to their human companions. I saw big dogs, small dogs and dogs dressed in the cutest little outfits.

One of the things I loved about this event, was that; they supported animal adoption. They had the dogs dressed in “Adopt Me” T-shirts. Naturally, I wanted to take them all home with me, but unfortunately, the plane on the fly home wouldn’t fit them all. ?
Every single dog that I met was amazing in his own special way.

“Disabilities” are nothing but ideas in our heads”

The Less fortunate…

Consequently, I started thinking about all those less fortunate animals that are mistreated and abandoned on the streets, and I wondered; why can’t these people see how amazing these creatures are? And why can’t we see that being stronger, doesn’t give us the right to control or hurt these animals?

You don’t even have to love them.. You just have to be kind enough…

While i was sitting there drowning in my thoughts, my eyes fell on one special dog, and then my heart just stopped for a second.
A three-legged dog, who we can call “Max”. Max was accompanied by another dog and their human friend.

Max… The Special Dog

At first I felt bad for the little guy.. But then surprisingly, the amount of life and energy he had, left me speechless.

Dubai Dog Show, 2011

Max did everything the rest of the dogs did, as a matter of fact, he was soo full of life and energy than most of the rest. He was doing tricks, goofing around, playing with the other dog and running around without a care in the world.. He just had an amazing spirit…

And, as I am watching him, I thought to myself; this dog has lost his leg.. Yet..he did not give a damn.
He didn’t sit around wondering why? He didn’t care… He didn’t focus on his flaws, or simply give up.
He refused to give up, act or feel different. He had fire in his eyes, and anyone could see it.
With a family who loved and supported him, Max was a Happy dog.

Let there be no Excuses

That dog that I don’t even know his real name, gave me a lesson i shall never forget.
Max taught me that; all our disabilities are just in our heads. And it’s not just the “physical” disabilities; but, our mental and psychological disabilities that drags us down so hard, leaving us too scared to even try…

All these limitations we think we have are nothing but walls we built in our minds to set us apart from what we should be doing most… To fulfill our dreams, what we believe in our hearts we were born to do.

All of these voices that were stored in the back of your mind when they told you; that you’re just not good enough, or that you can never be.. That your dreams were meaningless…

You are so much more than you think you are.
You’ve got the FIRE… The Will that can turn it all around, that makes the Impossible, a bit more Possible.”

Let’s break down those walls…  Disabilities are nothing but Ideas in our heads. Voices that we created so creatively to manipulate our minds into thinking that they are the real reasons why we can’t do more…
These struggles can give you “The FIRE” and the strength to be shameless, go out there, work harder than anybody else, stumble, stand up again and fight for it!
All these limitations mean absolutely nothing, and nothing is stopping us from doing whatever we want to do except these excuses we create.

We’re just too lazy and too scared to try, because we’re too scared to fail…
I may never see “Max” again… But I will never forget him…

How to choose your dog?

“Because all dogs are amazing… Sometimes it’s had to just Pick one!”

Known to be man’s Best Friend; Because of their loyalty, affection, protective nature, the strong bond they create with their companions, and a million other amazing qualities. Dogs are ranked as one of the 2 most popular pets Worldwide.
However, there are a couple of things you need to consider before getting your first dog, to find if a dog is the right choice of pet for you.

Did you know? According to science, dogs can make you happier!

Research, Learn… And then learn some more.

NEVER get a dog out of an impulse.

Raising a dog is very similar to raising a toddler, for an average of 10 years or more. So, to be a responsible dog companion, you need to take your time to learn everything you need to know beforehand.
Is a dog really the pet for you? Which breed best matches your lifestyle? Do you want a male or a female dog? Can you give him/her the Best Quality of life he/she deserves?

Make a list of your favorite dog breeds, and then look them up thoroughly; adult size, diet, fur shedding, likes and dislikes, energy level, training abilities, medical conditions, and every single details you could grasp so you can make an affirmative right decision.

So, why do you want to get a dog?

Are you looking for a dog to be your friend? A protector? Do you want a serving or an assistance dog? Do you have kids? Do you want a one-person dog or a family dog? Are you and elder or a younger person?  Do you want to get a puppy or do you want an older dog? Do you have other pets?
Decide why you want to get a dog, and accordingly, start narrowing down your choices.

Where do you live?Where do you live

Do you live in a small apartment? or a big house with a backyard? What about the weather conditions where you live? How much space do you have for your dog and his supplies?
Depending on where you live, you can choose the size of your dog, and how much barking can you and your neighbors tolerate?
Some dogs are really loud like; Rottweilers and Golden Retrievers. Whereas, others like; Afghan Hounds and Bull-mastiffs are more on the quieter side.
Some dogs like Siberian Huskies need a lot of space to run around, and can do much better in colder conditions. Moreover, they shed their fur like crazy… So you need to read as much as you can about the specific breeds of your interest, to find your perfect match.

What about your current economic situation?

Owning a dog can be really costly, and it varies from one breed to another. So if you don’t make a responsible decision, both you and your dog will have to suffer.
Adding to the expanses of buying the dog, you need to consider the costs of high quality food, supplies and medical care. If God forbids anything should happen to your dog, surgeries can be really costly. So how much you’re willing to spend on your dog is really important to determine which breed should you get, and wether it’s the right time to get a dog or not…

How much time and energy are you willing to spend?
What type of dogs matches your lifestyle?

Dogs are a huge part of our lives and families, but to dogs, we are their life.

Dogs - petsoholic

I don’t need to tell you that you need to spend time with your dog, because well…that’s probably a given.
But don’t force your lifestyle on your dog, instead, get a dog that matches your lifestyle.

Some dogs can tolerate being alone more than others, and puppies need a lot more attention and care than older dogs.
Do you have enough time to walk, play, bath, bond with your dog, and clean after him? Can you afford a dog walker? Who would take care of your dog if you had to travel?

Don’t get an outdoor, active, hunter dog and expect him to bind by your own rules. If you have an active lifestyle, and you have enough time and space for your dog, get a high energy level dog, if not, you can always get a lower energy level dog like French Bulldogs for example.
So, ask yourself: How much time and energy are you willing to spend on your dog?

Consider Adoption?Adopt - Petsoholic

There are so many abandoned animals in shelters everywhere, so before buying a dog… consider adapting one, and help save a life..

11 Things to consider before choosing your First Pet

If you’re reading this chances are; you’re thinking about getting your first pet..

Welcoming a new member to the family is very exciting, and pets can play a huge part in turning a house into a home.
It’s a responsibility that we chose to take, and the love and emotional support we get in return is just amazing. However, if it’s not planned right, it could turn into a real nightmare, and it’s our animals who pay the price.

⚠️ Never Buy a Pet out of an Impulse decision.

First, we need to go through some basic concepts:

Animals are not disposable, they are not another part of your collection, and they are definitely not ours to posses.
We do not “own” our animals.. As a matter of fact, if its anything, they are the ones who kinda own us ?. I mean, if you actually think about it; they take up your space, you prepare their meals, feed them, shower them, entertain them, and clean after them. Its kinda like having a toddler really.
Our pets are our companions, and we are their care takers, or as one of my favorite animal behaviorist “Jackson Galaxy” says; “We are their Guardians”.

Now let’s Find Your Perfect Match ?

Ask yourself these questions so you can make an informative, right decision:

1. Do they match your lifestyle?

Are you a morning or a night person? When is your free time?
Are you an outdoor person? or would you rather be indoors? Are you an Active person?

Animals have their own exotic wild nature, and its these behavioral, physical and mental differences that makes each specie amazing in its own unique way.
So you should always learn beforehand, respect and embrace their qualities. Don’t force your own lifestyle on them. For as, at he end, this would only lead to your and their frustration.
One of the worst things a pet owner could do is; buying a pet that doesn’t match their lifestyle, and then force their lifestyle and house rules on him/her ⚠

Animals’ lives should not be compromised to fit our world.

2. Do you have the time?

Do you have enough time to spend with your pet?
How much time do you spend at work?
Do you travel a lot?
Who can take care of your baby when you’re away?

Some pets are a bit independent and rather be left alone doing their own thing, while others are very social and need constant human interaction. They need to be around you all the time. And if that didn’t happen, they are subjected to depression which leads to so many behavioral problems. So you need to put that into consideration.

3. How long are you willing to commit?

Some animals have very short life spans, like Roborovski hamster who live around 3 years. While others can surpass our lives, like some parrots who can live up to 80 years, and tortoises who can live up to a 100 years if they are properly taken care of. So how long are you willing to commit to your pet friend?

4. Be prepared and understand the risks:

So whatever type of pet you decide to go for, there will always be risks. Because you’re dealing with a wild creature, even ones who have been domesticated for decades like cats and dogs. Animals are animals, and its the beauty of their wild nature that made us fall in love with them in the first place. Mistakes will happen among the most trained of all. Because even us as “Humans” we make mistakes.
So if you cannot deal with the mess, think again..
Do your homework, and be ready…

5. Where do you live?

Do you live in a house, a big apartment or a studio apartment? Do you have a backyard garden where your pets could hang out? Is your home pet friendly?

The sizes of animals vary and so does the space required. For example, if you live in a small apartment, and you get a cute little puppy, who grows up to be a really large dog, this could be a real issue. However, that doesn’t mean you cannot get one… you just need to be aware of every aspect so you know what you’re getting yourself into, what to expect, and how to prepare for it. Moreover, some animals are small, but they still need a large space for their enclosures and other stuff.

Nevertheless, Some pets could be really loud and vocal.. For example, if you are looking into larger parrots like Macaws; they can be REALLY LOUD, plus they do take a lot of space for their cage, toys and all that good stuff. Although you can train them not to scream, but they are recommended to people who live in a house, and not in an apartment.
So can you adapt to that? What about your neighbors?

6. Do you have kids? One-person Or a family pet?:

Some animals can get along well with children, while others are not recommended unless there is constant supervision.
Because, some animals like African Grey Parrots, are very phobic, they do not like sudden movements and they’re easily scared if they’re not properly socialized.

Moreover, some animals only bond with one-person who is probably their main care taker, and doesn’t really care about the rest. Whereas, there are others who are very social and can bond with the whole family.

7. Super cuddly, independent or somewhere in-between?

Do you want a pet that you can cuddle and kiss all the time, or would you rather have a pet who loves being around you doing his own business, while you’re doing your own. Every animal has his or her own personality even among the same breed.
So what kind of personality are you looking for?

For example, many cockatoo parrots owners give them up for adoption because they cannot keep up with their needs. Cockatoo parrots are one the most social and super cuddly breed  among parrots, so people buy them out of an impulse. But then they have to let them go when they realize that they don’t have enough time to hold and cuddle them.. All Day Long.

8. Can you afford it?

This is really important to think about before you welcome your new baby home. Adding to the cost of the pet, you need to think about their living expanses; food, toys, vet visits, enclosure, etc…
And it really depends on the specie. You need to know if you are ready to take that responsibility, or if it’s not the right time yet.

9. Do you have any kind of allergies?

This is quite obvious but you really need to get checked for allergies beforehand, because if you have a serious allergy to cats for example, you don’t wanna be sneezing for almost 16 years, and you don’t wanna get attached to an animal, only to find out that you have to let him go.

10. Research your Local vets beforehand

Are there good vets in your area? Do they treat the animal of your choice?

Depending on where you live, you need to make sure that there are good reputable vets around. Because nobody likes bad news but believe me, if God forbids anything should happen to your little baby and you are not prepared, its gonna be too hard to watch your poor baby suffer.

11. Consider adoption…

So many pets are suffering in silence because, their owners had to let them go.
Whereas, some are sent to shelters, and some are brutally thrown on the streets.

Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, about 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.
Source: https://www.aspca.org/animal-homelessness/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics.

Needless to say, these numbers represent the US. only. What about the rest of the world? The numbers are continuously growing and shelters are crying out for adoption. So consider adoption, and help save a life.

To sum up, there are endless numbers of animals, birds, fish and reptiles that you can choose from.

Take your time… Narrow down your list and start researching each one thoroughly, to find your perfect match ♡
